When people ask me what my star sign is, I always tell them the truth.
"I don't have one". I get a funny look and then they ask me for my birthday, so they can inform me I'm a Cancerian. It apparently means (to them) that I am sensitive, caring, nurturing, shrewd, controlling, manipulative, selfish, easily hurt and impressionable. The sort of descripition that might broadly apply to most people. Ho hum. Apparently, anyone born between 22nd June and 23rd July was born 'under the star sign' of Cancer the Crab. This means a lot to some people but the heart of the matter from their point of view is that, at the exact time I was born, the sun was in the star constellation of Cancer, as viewed from Planet Earth. Well no, actually it wasn't.
I saw through all this horoscope baloney at a very young age but it has taken me almost sixty-five orbits around the Sun to check where the Sun really was when I was born, on 15th July. I opened my very accurate astronomical (NOT astroLoGical) planetarium software, typed in my birthdate and went looking for where the Sun was in the sky that day. I was not surprised that it was not in Cancer!
There it is, just to the left of the twins in the Gemini constellation! They got it totally wrong. It doesn't actually reach the constellation of Cancer until 21st July. So, I maybe I am really a Gemini instead - quick-witted, curious, entertaining, open-minded, charming, witty, fickle, easily distracted, nervous and mischievous, committed. The sort of descripition that might broadly apply to most people.
Whatever. AstroLoGy is pre-medieval pseudoscience, it's inaccurate, it's plain stupid and people that use it to give false hope to gullible people get my gander up.
