Oct 21: Liberal Party Gone

Australia
A record breaking 20% plus by-election result sees Liberals probably defeated in "safe" Wentworth seat.

The people of Wentworth voted for a fine woman who will make an excellent and dignified parliamentarian, assuming she is declared the winner.

Phelps ran a strong campaign based on sensible, moderate policies and sound local representation, which contrasted with the business-as-usual, political brawling of the two major parties - and she stood up to everything which they and their money could throw at her.

I hope the "sensibles" in Warringah find a "new Kerryn Phelps" to run against Abbott.

What the people in Wentworth voted AGAINST was:

(1) lurching militant right wing minority extremism;
(2) ludicrous government instability;
(3) anti-scientific energy policy (don't mention the C-word);
(4) deposing a Prime Minister who, despite his disruptive "colleagues", had positioned the Coalition to be competitive at the next election;
(5) "wrecking ball" politicians Abbott, Dutton and Joyce who looked back at the unstable Rudd-Gillard years - and instead of seeing a warning they saw a template for their own destructive ambitions;
(6) insane (and frequently ugly) media bias in the form of Hadley, Bolt, Jones, Murdoch and Sky News;
(7) Coalition Senators who all voted for Hansen's white-supremacist motion;

and last but not least, they voted against

(8) a male dominated Liberal Party which long ago discarded it's own core principles - and even has difficulty understanding that the days of religious exemptions to anti-discrimination laws are over.

One of the excuses for deposing Turnbull was the Longman by-election result. He was denounced by many for what was actually a below average 2PP by-election swing of only 4% against the government. So what will a (record breaking) 20% swing in Wentworth mean for the ultra-conservatives now? Yet another party room leadership spill?

The right and centre factions in the Liberal Party used to co-exist in peace, recognising that the Labor Party was the main threat. Since Abbott took centre stage a decade ago he has stirred up animosity between colleagues, leaving the Party untenable for both factions. The ultra-conservatives want to claim the Liberal Party for themselves but if voters want to believe in facism, white supremacy and hard-line ultra-conservatism - then they could just as easily vote for Hansen.

Traditional liberals - who were disgusted with the way the Liberal Party has behaved - found a moderate independent to vote for. They could no longer vote for a Liberal Party (which has lost connection with the liberal ideology that is still contained in its core platform) and so they deserted it to vote for a moderate independent who is seemingly quite.......liberal.

Above us only sky...

The glory of the 'heavens' above us are real, their starry splendour is visible to those who look up; but the glory of 'Heaven' is a sad delusion of human minds.
