Determined to get a better image of Comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) than a few days earlier, the clouds parted and I set up the camera on the Polarie Vixen and tripod.
I used a more powerful lens (135mm) on the Canon 60D but although I imaged the comet in the exact spot indicated by the amazing Sky Safari app, I was not to know this for sure until I viewed the images later.
I am disappointed, because this comet was predicted to be at magnitude +8.0, it seemed much fainter and I saw no trace of a tail. It seemed indistiguishable from the magnitude +11 star adjacent. The location of these two objects is ringed:
Comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring), Canon 60D, 135mm, 15 sec, f/2, ISO 1600 (c) R.P.
In the following image I added an arrow. Two objects are visible in the ring. Comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring) is the right hand object. On the left is TYC 9136-0976-1 (mag. 11.55):
Comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring), Canon 60D, 135mm, 15 sec, f/2, ISO 1600 Cropped (c) R.P.
I am not sure if it is worth pursuing this comet, it does not seem to have achieved it's brightness predictions - although it may look better with an even stronger lens and a light pollution filter.
Also visible in this image are NGC 361 NGC 346 and IC 1624.
