Mar 16: Abbott Baffled by Own Policy

Same-Sex Marriage
Prime Minister Abbott was unable to explain his own policy to inquisitive students.

A bunch of bright school children cheered enthusiastically when one of them confronted the Prime Minister Abbott with the leading question: "Why are you so against legalising gay marriage?"

Why indeed....

His answer was that he is against it because it is "a definitional thing".

Oh dear, oh deary, deary oh me..............that is number three on my List of Pathetic Excuses for Opposing Marriage Equality.

Abbott has been avoiding giving straight answers to questions for so long now that it comes naturally to him. The students thought that his response was pathetic (and so do I). They expected a straight answer to a simple question (and so do I).

Let's go straight to the bottom line here: the Prime Minister of Australia has adopted a policy against Marriage Equality and after several years he is still unable to come up with a satisfactory answer as to why he takes that position.

He might just as well have stated: "There is no reason for it. It is just my policy."

I think it is not "a definitional thing" but a "generational thing". There is hope for Australia. These children are an example of how, in just one more generation, reason will win over ignorant policy and possibly within a few decades Australia might be hosting a "Sorry to Gays" day at Parliament House, to apologise for all the mistreatment meted out to them over a very long period.

The Weak Opposition to Same Sex Marriage
Forty Fifty8 pathetically weak arguments against necessary social change. I have followed a few on-line debates on Same-Sex Marriage recently. The arguments which opponents put against gay marriage are always high on fear & contempt, whi

Tony Abbott Is Not A Liberal
How long will Australia put up with him? Australia is now governed by a reactionary, far right, religious clique, the likes of which I have never experienced. Prime Minister Tony Abbott and his cabinet, all sworn in clutching their bibles, have ma

Above us only sky...

The glory of the 'heavens' above us are real, their starry splendour is visible to those who look up; but the glory of 'Heaven' is a sad delusion of human minds.

Wise words

"The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what's true."
