I was grateful to be invited again to the MAS pre-meeting dinner and an opportunity to chat with Ángel. Also invited was our former Patron, Dr. Ragbir Bhathal, Director of the UWS Rotary Observatory, who was attending to promote his new book: "Mt Stromlo Observatory - From Bush Observatory to the Nobel Prize", amongst other reasons.
Dr. Ángel R. López-Sánchez (AAO); Dr Ragbir Bathal; Tony Law, John Rombi, Self.
I've left it rather late to write about Ángel's talk at the Macarthur Astronomy Forum but it was a lively discussion about the importance of learning as much as we can about the galaxies in our vicinity at multiple wavelengths. The sub-title of the talk was: "A Multiwavelength View of Nearby Galaxies".
Dr. Ángel R. López-Sánchez (AAO).
Images of Galaxy M51 (The Whirlpool Galaxy) at various wavelengths:
M51 in different wavelengths.
Centaurus A:
Centaurus A (NGC 5128)
The first thing you notice when you look at the images of these two objects is that they look so different at the various different wavellengths. The story is not complete until the object is observed in all wavelengths.
This talk reminded me that the "SkyNet" Citizen Science project is using our home computers to generate images and properties of local galaxies at multiple wavelengths, exactly as described by Ángel - but that is another story.
