The tripod on my Vixen Polarie camera mount seemed unstable.
Problem 1: I felt it could easily be accidentally knocked over. With a polarie mount, DSLR camera and telephoto lens on top, the centre of gravity would be up near the camera itself.
Problem 2: I also felt it might be prone to camera shake, as the tripod has no cross bracing to reduce vibrations.
It obviously needed a "high-tech" solution to steady it.
Solution: My fellow MAS member (now President) Chris Malikoff showed me how he stabilises his tripod. All I needed was a hook at the base of the central column, a spare telescope counterweight and about four metres of rope. I rummaged in the garage, found all three components and this was the satisfying result:
Now, it's as solid as a rock and the centre of gravity is down near the counterweight, not up near the camera. Thanks for the tip, Chris!
