Sometimes I get asked what I do now that I am retired.
I spent four years of my retirement as Secretary of Macarthur Astronomical Society and since vacating that busy post I still help out where I can. As well as an interest in astronomy, I am an editor for two on-line projects, Wikipedia and Trove.
For Wikipedia, I write new pages on topics that interest me. Pages that I have created (or carried out ajor edits) are:
A Wikipedia editor also updates existing pages and corrects any mistakes found and I involve myself mainly in astronomy and the local pages for Campbelltown and the Macarthur district. I feel improving the knowledge base of this astonishing free encyclopaedia is a very worthwhile way of contributing to the general community interest.
Trove is a project of the National Library of Australia. As a Trove editor, I contribute to the digitising of historical Australian newspaper articles and I have taken a particular interest in digitising the early post-war Sydney Morning Herald for July and August 1945.
The Trove project provides a scan of the newspaper's pages and a preliminary OCR digitisation of each article, which needs to be perused in detail and corrected for errors. When finished, the Herald, from 1803 to 1954, will be digitised and corrected. As I write, I am editing this page and have so far edited over 38,000 lines.
These projects help to keep me out of mischief.
