After the Australian Parliament voted to defeat two bills to approve same-sex marriage last week, I was half-expecting something discriminatory in the local press from the predictably pious Judith Bond. Well, someone else not only anticipated her contribution but also got his/her message in at the same time.

It's sad to read such ignorant views but it was very refreshing to see a rebuttal printed beneath her effort, from a christian whose views are less hard-hearted and more open-minded. Whilst I dislike organised religion and the figureheads who promote it, I have much greater faith in the common sense of the majority of lay Christians to think straight on important issues like gay marriage. Unfortunately, the views of the majority (including the majority of Christians) were not represented by the MPs and Senators who callously blocked this necessary legislation.
"Universal Marriage, Ms Bond?" This is Australia, not the cosmos. Marriage in Australia is defined by the Parliament of Australia, not by one of your gods. Do you really think that, if alien beings exist on other planets, they will have their marriage laws ordained by the religion which you by chance belong to?
"One man with one wife for life, you say?" Why should same-sex couples be denied the same marriage rights enjoyed by the other 99% of the population - and have you never heard that divorce is legal?
Why do so many people in Parliament (and some outside it) want to judge people because they dare to be different?
