Moving backwards.
The Queensland Premier, Mr. Newman, said today he will rescind the laws on civil unions, when he ought to be supporting the rights of all sections of the community the right to marry.
1. "We believe in the inalienable rights and freedoms of all peoples."
2. "We believe in a just and humane society."
3. "We believe in equal opportunity for all Australians."
There is nothing in Liberal Party policy which says "The above does not apply if it offends militant Christian groups, such as the ACL or other reactionary organisations." The Liberal Party is not the political wing of the Christian movement, although some obviously do see it that way.
Denying same-sex marriage is a denial of "inalienable rights and freedoms", is "unjust and inhumane" and contravenes "equal opportunity for all Australians". Denying them even civil unions is a step back to the dark ages.
He seeks to remove hard-won rights, when he should be building on them. He should support giving all Australians equal rights, instead of removing them. He is moving backwards when he ought to be moving forwards.
