This item from her appeared in the Macarthur Advertiser, 30th November 2011:
This letter probably rates about six on the Richter Scale of Bigotry. The author is well known locally for espousing her irrational christian fundamentalist views in the local papers - which is possibly why she lost badly when she stood for election in the 2008 Campbelltown Council election.
Ms. Bond says: "Homosexuality is biologically a dead end." This is probably intended to dump on homosexuals because they cannot directly procreate as a couple. If the inability to reproduce is her main criteria for refusing a marriage licence, then all prospective partners in every heterosexual marriage will henceforth need to present a positive pre-nuptial Fertility Test Certificate before the ceremony can proceed.
She also says: "We do not redefine what is true and tested and has worked for thousands of years." That's complete nonsense. Of course we do! We do so if the "true and tested" can be improved or made to work better; we do so to remove discrimination; we do so to correct a social injustice; and we do so if we can enhance the lives of members of a minority without affecting the majority in any way.
To argue that we should be observing the laws formulated by primitives thousands of years ago - before parliaments evolved - is bizarre. Homosexuality has always existed but in the modern era we have rightly destigmatised it and tolerated it. Now we are slowly casting aside the fundamental christian intolerance and learning to fully accept it.
Same sex marriage will have zero impact on Ms. Bond and her homophobia will probably further increase the support for it in the community. She won't like it but a recent Galaxy poll indicated that 53% of Australians who identify as Christians support same-sex marriage, while only 41% oppose. 67% of non-Christians support it. I hope our politicians will support it too.
