July 1969, The Rolling Stones free concert in Hyde Park, London.
Fifteen months before I migrated to Australia, on a warm summer Saturday afternoon, I attended a free Rolling Stones concert in London's Hyde Park. It was a sea of people and I arrived with my friend Barry much too late to get the best vantage point. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the concert, hearing it loud and clear from a considerable distance, somewhere not far from Marble Arch and Speaker's Corner.
What a fantastic musical afternoon!
I had never seen so many people! Football crowds (of up to 69,000 at White Hart Lane and 100,000 at Wembley), were the biggest crowds I had ever experienced until then.The crowd in Hyde Park was estimated at 250,000, more than double the size of any previous crowd I had encountered. It seemed as though every person from my generation living in London had converged to be in the same place at the same time. It was also very well- behaved.
