Reuters said "The Police Ombudsman's report revealed that a cardinal was involved in moving Father James Chesney out of British-ruled Northern Ireland, highlighting anew the way the Church hierarchy shielded priests from allegations of criminal activity. No one was ever charged or convicted for the triple car bomb attack on the village of Claudy, but the republican guerrilla group the IRA was assumed to be responsible. Those killed included a nine-year-old-girl and two teenage boys." The priest was transferred to Donegal in the Irish Republic in 1973 and died there in 1980.
Amazingly, the Police Ombudsman said he found no evidence of criminal intent on the part of the government or the church and that he was "satisfied that the same situation would not be repeated today." Really? You got that bit wrong, Mr. Ombudsman. By definition, cover ups are of criminal intent and cover up after cover up after cover up of criminal activity by priests have been exposed over recent years with very little in the way of government action and nothing but hollow apologies from insincere bishops and popes trying to stop their congregation from leaving.
I don't know which is worse, priests killing innocent men, women and children in terrorist attacks; or priests molesting and raping young children who never recover from their ordeals. What I do know is that the endless corrupt covering up of these heinous crimes, by the church hierarchy in collusion with governents is just as bad, possibly worse.
