Australia's media continues with its obsession with the three rugby codes (League, Union and AFL), yet for years Football (call it Soccer if you must) has been the most popular sport in Australia.
This is a graph of participation by Roy Morgan Research published in this survey about what they call the "four codes of football":
As this table of total participation in the four sports shows, there are more people playing Real Football than Aussie Rules and the two rugby games combined!
Football (soccer) 1,360,000
Aust. Rules: 604,000
Rugby League: 327,000
Rugby Union: 178,000
Yet still we get blitzed by the oval ball on television. Every game, every training session, every injury, every transgression, every player accused of serious assault or drug charges, every award dinner - its all wrapped up on every news bulletins. In the meantime, Australia's most popular sport - the worlds most popular sport - barely gets a mention.
