How to set up your BOINC Manager so it runs without disruption.
So, you've installed the BOINC Manager software and selected your first project!
Now go into the "View" menu and make sure you are using the Advanced view. Then select "Tools" and "Computing Preferences". This is where you tell BOINC how much or how little of your computer's resources are to be used by BOINC.
These three images show how I have set mine up currently:
In Tab 1, I allow BOINC to run while I am using the computer for other purposes if I am not using more than 30% of CPU. I allow 88% of my eight CPUs to run (i.e. seven of them) and they will run at the rate of 0.85 seconds per second. I don't recommend you run CPUs at 100%, due to heat generation.
In Tab 2, I keep the work buffer small at 0.25 days but there is no harm in raising this, it just puts more work units in the queue.
In Tab 3, I restrict the disc usage to 25 Gb and instruct BOINC not to use no more than 25% of memory while I am at the computer doing something else.
You can play with these settings and if for any reason the computer is not coping, you can just wind back the resources which have been allocated.
Tab 4 is one which I have found no need to explore, it allows you to suspend BOINC processing automatically when certain nominated software is running.
