Fred Watson, Astronomer In Charge at the Australian Astronomical Observatory talked to the Macarthur Astronomy Forum in a lecture called "It's Time!".
As usual, Fred was very entertaining and we learnt a bit about how time is measured. Marking the passing of our lives is just the measurement of time. It is not time itself, so he followed this with a discussion about the nature of time but I still don't really understand what time is! This is a topic which I find just as intriguing and perplexing as the nature of space.
At a simple level, time is what prevents all events from occurring simultaneously. Space is what prevents all events from occurring in the same place - but I want to know what time really is, at a deeper level. We know it is a dimension of space-time but not much else.
To be fair, I did not expect a detailed explanation of the fundamentals of time from Fred - because there isn't one, yet.
Physicists need more time to do that.
