A bunch of bright school children cheered enthusiastically when one of them confronted the Prime Minister Abbott with the leading question: "Why are you so against legalising gay marriage?"
Why indeed....
His answer was that he is against it because it is "a definitional thing".
Oh dear, oh deary, deary oh me..............that is number three on my List of Pathetic Excuses for Opposing Marriage Equality.
Abbott has been avoiding giving straight answers to questions for so long now that it comes naturally to him. The students thought that his response was pathetic (and so do I). They expected a straight answer to a simple question (and so do I).
Let's go straight to the bottom line here: the Prime Minister of Australia has adopted a policy against Marriage Equality and after several years he is still unable to come up with a satisfactory answer as to why he takes that position.
He might just as well have stated: "There is no reason for it. It is just my policy."
I think it is not "a definitional thing" but a "generational thing". There is hope for Australia. These children are an example of how, in just one more generation, reason will win over ignorant policy and possibly within a few decades Australia might be hosting a "Sorry to Gays" day at Parliament House, to apologise for all the mistreatment meted out to them over a very long period.
