Nov 7: We know the Universe

Cosmology
Its beginning, its time-scale and it's evolution.

We have discovered so much about the Universe that we know with a very great degree of certainty how it began, when it began, how it evolved and what will happen to it in the future.

Our species has developed the ability to fathom out the exquisite fundamental facts about our Universe. I think we should be inspired by that. We are the first generation of our species on our planet that has been able to work out the glory of the Universe.

Who knows, we may even be the first species in the Universe to figure out what the Universe is.

Dr. Tamara Davis puts it best in this eighteen minute talk:

The Big Bang Theory is convincingly supported by the discovery by Hubble in 1924 that the galaxies were all receding from each other. From this it was inferred that the Universe is expanding over time; and this led to the conclusion that as you look back in time, the galaxies were much closer together. The Big Bang theory was a result of this discovery and confirmation came decades later with the discovery of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) - exactly as the Big Bang theory predicts. We now know the Big Bang occurred 13,798,000,000 years ago, plus or minus 37 million years!

A close inspection of the CMB reveals enough information to explain the evolution of the Universe which produced the galaxies in the formation that we observe today.

In short, we know the Universe.

As Prof. Geraint Lewis would say: How cool is that!!!!!

Above us only sky...

The glory of the 'heavens' above us are real, their starry splendour is visible to those who look up; but the glory of 'Heaven' is a sad delusion of human minds.
This is the personal blog site of an atheist astronomer.

Wise words

"There is no such thing as the paranormal and the supernatural; there is only the normal and the natural and mysteries we have yet to explain."
