May 9: SSM - Local debate (2)
Following last week's four letters published in the Campbelltown Macarthur Advertiser, two of us sent follow up letters:
Mr. Wyer said last week that Gays have no right to bring up children and those wanting to marry are "self-centred". Yet this week he has the gall to argue that denial of marriage equality is not discrimination!
He also argues that same-sex marriage will restructure society - but when the marriage of Mrs. & Mrs. Millers is finally recognised in Australia, neither Mr. Wyer, nor I, will notice any change in our own hetero family units.
I understand that it takes time for people to grasp the concept of equal marriage rights for all - but I am sure the Aussie "Fair Go" spirit will prevail in the end. In the meantime, those who really oppose it come up with weak excuses - but no arguments with substance.
I support equal marriage rights because:
- (a) gays are being denied a basic human right;
- (b) the opposition to it consists only of very, very weak excuses;
- (c) homophobic discrimination ought to be relegated to history; and
- (d) I am a Liberal, believing in the rights of minorities; equal opportunity; and fair social justice.
