When Venus nears inferior conjunction (closest pass to Earth) its apparent diameter becomes larger and it becomes crescent shaped, because the sunny side of the planet is facing away from us. Unfortunately, because it becomes lower in altitude, it also becomes much harder to image the crescent, due to the much larger distance its light takes passing through Earth's turbulent atmosphere.
