Most of the time your computer processor is 'idling' - even when you are using it. Join this interesting new project and you will be helping professional radio astronomers process real data, using some of the spare capacity available on your computer. Radio astronomy produces vast amounts of data to be processed. By connecting large numbers of computers via the Internet to a central server, SkyNet makes massive amounts of computer power available to astronomers and empowers them to emulate a single super-computer, without having to build one. It's called 'Distributed Computing' or 'Grid Computing'.
As soon as you join, your computer begins processing data obtained from the SkyNet server and you are immediately making a contribution to professional astronomy, yet most of the time you won't even know it's doing it. SkyNet will use up some of your download capacity (Radio Astronomy files are big) to bring data to your computer - but the SkyNet dashboard permits you to control that, so you won't go over your limit.
You can find them on Facebook or you can join up to SkyNet by registering at www.theskynet.org and if you wish to, you can also join an 'alliance' of other like-minded participants, to form a team. I formed the 'Macarthur Astronomical Society' alliance, which is not just for our paid up members but also for family and friends of members; and friends of the Society.
