The Catholic Church hierarchy. Why?

They have a stranglehold on governments
They have a hold over governments worldwide. Despite the overwhelming number of decent lay people in their local congregations, the church hierachy scandalously gets away with molesting, raping and beating children and obstructing the course of justice. It's happened in the USA, Belgium, UK, Malta, Spain, here in Australia and in so many other countries. We know it has gone on in Ireland for at least sixty years but the criminal behaviour is so endemic within the eclesiastics of this rotten organisation in so many countries and is so similar in nature that it surely evolved from a common ancestry. So, this lawless culture in all probablility originated centuries ago and the likely birthplace was Rome.
Christopher Hitchens, (an atheist and human rights activist, who recently campaigned for equal rights for Catholics in England) writes:
"As we have recently been forcibly reminded, the Roman Catholic Church holds it better for the cries of raped and violated children to be ignored, and for the excuses and alibis of their rapists and torturers indulged, and for a host of dirty and wilful untruths to be manufactured wholesale, and for the funds raised ostensibly for the poor to be paid out in hush money and shameful bribery, rather than that one tiny indignity or inconvenience be visited on the robed majesty of a man-made church or any limit set to its self-proclaimed right to be judge in its own cause."
The leaders of the world's largest paedophile ring are still permitted to conceal their crimes and Mr. Ratzinger is very heavily implicated in the cover up. Yet when moves were foreshadowed to arrest him on his forthcoming British tour the government invoked legislation to protect his freedom and warned human rights organisations that he is off limits.
Why are so many government's frightened to act against criminals in robes? Why have the nations of the world not set up anti-corruption task forces to investigate and raid the temples, the palaces and the ringleader's central HQ for documented evidence? Why are the cardinals, the archbishops and the other clergymen exempted from the law? Why, oh why, is the Chief Executive Officer himself not already behind bars and why is his complicit dead predecessor, Mr. Wojtyła, being groomed for "sainthood"?.
How is it possible for such a heinous, deeply entrenched culture of criminal activity to be permitted to continue for centuries without intervention from within or without? The answer, of course, is personal fear. The victims are fearful of speaking out. The church hierarchy is fearful of losing it's three most valuable commodities (it's ever faithful bums on pews; it's already dwindling clergy; and it's reputation). The government's who should be dealing with criminals, without fear or favour, are in fear themselves of a voter backlash from the remaining bums on seats.
The criminal element of this organisation needs to be cleaned up and it should not be left to human rights organisations to do it.
